2011 Activities

During 2011, the NKHS held nine regular monthly meetings open to guests, one members-only wine-tasting and social hour, one public workshop at the Boone County Library, and decorated the cabin at the Dinsmore Homestead for the holidays. It also gained several new members.

Decorating for Christmas at Dinsmore
As we've done for several years, we did not have a regular meeting in December to allow more time for family activities. However, we did gather at the historic Dinsmore Homestead to clean and decorate the log cabin for the annual "Christmas in the Country" celebration. We decorated it with organic materials and homemade ornaments just like it would have been done in rural cabins in the 1800s.
Nov 10Regular monthly meeting Herbal Christmas Presents
Members brought samples of herb-inspired or herb-based gifts that they had made and discussed them in a "show and tell" manner so other members could make similar gifts. They included tasty, edible treats, a delightfully aromatic potpouri, and elgant glycerin soaps.
Oct 13Regular monthly meeting Rosemary and Propagation by Cutting
Maryann reported on the history and uses of Rosemary while we sampled a number of dishes members had prepared with this wonderful herb. We also learned how to take cuttings for propagation and practiced the technique on plants that members brought in to share. (See Grace's tips in The Garden of Grace section of this website.
Sept 8Members only social Wine Tasting of Herb-Infused Wines
What a wonderful evening we had for our herbal wine tasting and pot luck dinner. Everything was delightful from tasting and rating our wine infusions before dinner through the exquiste appetizers and savory main courses to the buttery and delicious lavender cookies we had for dessert. Click here for the recipe for the Sangrito Melissa brought.

Grow Your Own Pesto Garden
A full house was on hand to hear NKHS members talk about the necessary plants and process for making pesto sauces from a variety of easy-to-grow herbs. Participants had lots of fun learning about the herbs, nibbling on herb snacks, and planting a mini pesto herb garden to take home.
April 14Regular monthly meeting Seed sharing
Members discussed their plans for this year's planting season and shared their extra seeds with one another. Some were leftover from last year; others were the result of larger-than-needed packets being purchased for this year.
March 10Regular monthly meeting Go Green - celebrating St. Patrick’s Day
We turned the room green with food, facials and fun. The different interpretations of "Go Green" included a spirit-infused Irish fudge, Lon Chaney-esque lavender/almond/flax facial treatments, and prizes for those who were most in the know during our Herbal Jeopardy game.
Feb. 10Regular monthly meeting Packing herbs for the Celebration of Hope
During this hands-on work session we filled and labeled 200 jars of herbs as gifts for the breast cancer survivors who attend the annual Celebration of Hope. Click here for photos of our herbs at the Celebration of Hope.
Jan. 13Regular monthly meeting2011 Planning Session
We successfully brainstormed about this year's meetings, workshops, and special events. We also nailed down the details of our next meeting when we'll prepare herb samples for the Celebration of Hope at St. Elizabeth Women’s Wellness Center.
